Perhaps I just can't find it.......

In a complex image, I just want to work on a certain part, but can't find a way to simple way to create an aperture. Crop is OK but you can't overlay the result on the image source.

'Display circle' would be great, but unfortunately, one can only fill the inside, not the outside. The other option is to make a few overlapping circles, then make them black.
Any other menu options, besides just making my own mask in paint?

Sounds like you are looking for a custom mask in paint and then apply that to the image.

You can use the Crop and place that ontop of the original image ... the Crop module creates variables that allow you to use them in combining it back into the original. If you include an example image and its crop we can show you how to complete that merge back.
