Whenever I add the NXT module to the pipeline RR just decides to stop working altogether. Is there a way of fixing this?

Yes ... could you post your robofile below that you use just before you add the NXT module and it crashes? We're not able to replicate that crash so perhaps there is a module before it that is causing an issue.
Also do you get an immediate crash after attempting to add the NXT or are you able to see that interface and then it crashes?
