How to use Moment Statistics

I was wondering what Moment Statistics would be used for and how to segment images to create individual blobs.
Also why are some of the variables in terms of ellipses and what are the normalized and invariant variables used for?
Could you give me an example or link me to a page with more detail because the documentation for it was quite bare.

That's why the documentation is bare, this topic is well explored by many other sites. Moments of inertia analysis and use is a very common and well known image processing technique.
If you provide an image and what you want to extract quantify we can provide more specific examples. Otherwise, you have a lot of reading. :-)
