RoboRealm on Raspberry Pi!

Hi all,

Just to share, I managed to run RoboRealm on the Raspberry Pi 3 using Exagear and Wine.

Performance is pretty slow, and the Pi gets hot quiet fast. The webcam feed lags about 1-2s, which is actually not that bad (at least for my application).

Arif,

Thanks for the post!! Yes, we've run some basic experiments on the PI in terms of just image grabbing and while it is possible to do, the processing of anything larger than 320x240 seems to overtax the PI. The PI one was basically useless but the PI 3 has gotten a lot better. We're not 100% sure how much slower it runs when using Wine due to any emulation that Wine does, but its certainly better than nothing!

What we have been waiting for is USB integration in Wine. Its very strange that the screen capture actually works as that's the only way of getting access to webcams right now. (i.e. use a native app to show the webcam image and the screen capture in RR to grab the image) Alternatively, IP cameras should work much better since they don't have any special drivers required ... so it might be possible to run an IP camera into RR within Wine with better results.

Along these same lines, if a smaller embedded system is desired have a look at the following system which others have used to run RR on smaller packages. Note, we've not tested all of these so there are always possible issues that we haven't forseen. The first 2 (Intel Compute Stick and GizmoSphere) we HAVE tested and like. This isn't necessarily a current list (it seems to change daily these days!) so if you find something else that you are not sure about let us know by posting here.

Hi Steven,
Thanks a lot for the reply. Yeah I'm trying to run on the cheapest hardware possible, I think none of the ones you mentioned costs <$100.

No argument there! Yea, the PI is probably one of the cheapest ... perhaps the $9 CHIP would be cheaper? Would still need to use Wine and such.

but I would not imagine the performance would be better than PI.

Steven,

Can you tell me more about the performance of the Intel Compute Stick and GizmoSphere? Was it at least comfortable working and running RR on them?

Arif,

They are quite comfortable in terms of performance. The actual frame rate will depend on what modules you are using. If you want you can post a robofile and I can test on both systems with an external logitech camera capable of 30fps to see how they compare. If you post the robofile you used with the PI I can try that with a 640x480 resolution which will give a reasonable comparison with the PI.
