iRobot Roomba Sensor Reading

I am using the Roomba module provided RoboRealm along with the VB scripting module and having trouble reading sensor values. Sometimes certain variables that I've defined would read "0" and other times it would not say anything. Variables are initialized with setVariable ("VARIABLE_NAME"),"" and selected with the appropriate sensor in the Roomba module. I've also tried reading the variable using the getVariable function with no success. Can anyone please tell me what to try or provide me with some code on how to read sensor values off the Roomba?
