Laser plus object plus center screen

Hi,

I would like to build a system such that:

I have a turret that can rotate and move up and down.
On the turret is a camera and a laser.
The laser is aligned with the camera.

I would like to detect an object and move the turret such that the laser dot is on a specific point on the object and the dot is centered on the screen.

Can you give be a brief list of topics to look at and or research and point me in the right direction.
