Robot Control form Overhead camera

How does one control the path of a robot when the only input is the image from the overhead camera? Once an image is acquired and the instructions are given to the bot to move to the next waypoint how do you make sure that it is moving on the right path?

I have to design a robot which will collect a ball that is rolled into the arena. Bonus points if the bot can chase the ball when it is in motion.
